January Bee Creative Block

I finished my actual Bee Creative block. It's not as bold as the other one, but I think it goes with the other blocks that everyone is making a little better.

For February we're making red and white pin wheels. I'm still looking for one I love. Any suggestions?

Bee Creative

I joined my first bee! Our first block is a Union Jack. We were supposed to do it in whatever colors we wanted. It's a paper pieced block, which is super intimidating to me! I decided to practice with this block. I forgot a few times to add the outside seam allowance to the pieces, and I had to unpick about 8 seams, but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I don't love these color choices, so I think I'm going to use something else for my real block!

Margaret's Hope Chest Quilting Bee

Carin over at Margaret's Hope Chest opened up a quilting bee a few months ago. If you haven't visited her site, you should. They give quilts to children whose parents are incarcerated. They started this charity after her grandmother, a quilter, was murdered. It's an amazing thing they do.

For the Wrapped in Hope project, custom quilts are usually made for a child by one quilter. For the bee, each quilter is making 2 blocks for the quilt. I volunteered and much to my suprise, Carin sent me directions for 3 different children! I got a little overwhelmed by all the decisions and learning new blocks that I didn't make much progress. I'm supposed to have the first blocks done by August so I thought I should get busy.

I was supposed to use this tutorial for a string block. I ended up LOVING making these blocks! They were fun to put together and I could use a ton of different fabric. My daughter had a great time helping me pick out fabric and got mad if I didn't let her tear the paper off the back! These blocks are for a little girl who is going to turn 13. The suggestions were pink, purple and cats.

These are my favorites. Harmony is going to be 12. She wanted blue, red, and green blocks.

I have 2 more blocks to make before I get these in the mail to Carin, but they are a different design. I'm pretty motivated to get them done, so hopefully I'll be posting pics of those next week!

Sew Fresh Fabric Scrap Bee

If you remember, I was picked to participate in the Sew Fresh Fabric Scrap Bee last month. I received these fabrics:

I was supposed to make a 12.5 by 12.5 unfinished block to be added to a quilt for a little boy. I had a really hard time with this because the magenta fabric and the polka dot fabric were pretty large pieces. I ended up with this:

I'm very happy with the way it turned out. I added the orange from my scraps. I think this block will work very well with the other ones that have been made. You can check them out here.

My first bee!

Sew Fresh Fabrics was trying to decide what to do with their scraps and decided to host a bee for Project Linus. Project Linus collects and distributes blankets for children in hospitals, shelters, social service agencies, etc. Sew Fresh Fabrics is going to send me a bag of scraps to make a quilt block for a little boy quilt! I'm so excited. Plus I get to keep whatever scraps are left. Double win! Now to find the perfect block...
